Health Insurers in Maryland Ask Rate Increases Up to 91%


Insurers in Maryland’s Obamacare market are requesting an average rate increase of 30 percent in insurance premiums, with some asking for premium hikes as high as 91 percent.

CareFirst seeks a rate increase of 18.5 percent for a health insurance plan that covers 123,000 Maryland residents. CareFirst requests an increase of 91 percent for a plan currently covering 15,000 residents.

Kaiser Permanente seeks a rate increase of 37.5 percent for an insurance plan covering 74,000 Marylanders.

Some Democrat leaders have been quick to blame the proposed premium hikes in Maryland, as well as those in Virginia, on the Trump administration’s health care policies. …
